What's love got to do with it? And who was St Valentine anyway?

February 14th...The day when lovers exchange gifts, flowers, cards, and chocolates with their special 'valentine'. Ever wondered how Valentine's Day came about? Well here's a little history for ya:
During the third century in Rome, Emporer Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men. He thought that single men made better soldiers. A young priest named Valentine disobeyed Claudius' orders and continued performing marriages for young couples in secret. Claudius was told of Valentine’s actions and sentenced him to death. That fateful day was February 14th.  Poor Valentine:(
While in jail, Valentine fell in love with the jail keeper's daughter, who would visit him in prison. Before he was put to death, Valentine had a messenger deliver a letter to the girl and signed it, “From Your Valentine” as a final goodbye.

A Few Fun Facts:

  • Some people leave Valentine's cards anonymous? The Victorians thought it was bad luck to sign Valentine's cards with their names. The Victorians also started the rose-giving trend.
  • It is estimated that over fifty million roses are given annually for Valentine's Day.
  • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to pick a Valentine. They would wear the name of the person pinned on their sleeves - hence the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve".
  • XOXO? The X symbol means a kiss because in medieval times most people couldn't write their names so they signed their cards with an X and kissed it.
  • Cupid- you little rascal:) Cupid is known as the "god" of desire, attraction, and affection. He is believed to be the son of the love goddess Venus and the war god Mars. He is usually pictured as a small figure with wings, a bow, and arrow which he uses to strike the hearts of people. People who fall in love are believed to be ‘struck by Cupid’s arrow’.
So there you have it- a little bit of history behind the world’s most romantic day.

How will you spend your Valentine’s Day?
